How face score is calculated
What actually happens between uploading a photo and getting a number — and why you should read that number with a grain of salt.
Every face rater starts the same way: a face model places a set of fixed points — landmarks — on your features. Some models use 68 points, others use several hundred. FaceGrade maps 478 of them, which lets it measure things like the exact outer corner of each eye or the angle of your jaw, not just a rough outline.
Landmarks on their own mean nothing. The score comes from turning those points into ratios. A ratio is just one distance divided by another, so it stays the same whether your photo is large or small, close or far. The five ratios that go into a face score here are:
- Symmetry — how far each left-side feature is from the midline compared to its right-side twin, after levelling your eye line so a tilted head doesn't count as uneven.
- Facial thirds — your mid-face height divided by your lower-face height, checked against a balanced target.
- Golden ratio — four φ-style ratios (face length-to-width, mouth-to-cheek, eye-span, nose-to-face) averaged together.
- Canthal tilt — the upward angle of your eye axis, in degrees.
- Jaw & chin — your jaw width relative to your cheekbones, plus the angle at your chin.
Each ratio is then scored from 0 to 100 by how close it sits to a cited ideal. A ratio exactly on target scores near 100 and slides away smoothly as it drifts. The final face score is a weighted average of those five sub-scores, stretched onto a 1–10 scale. Symmetry and golden ratio carry the most weight because they are the proportions people cite most often.
Where the number stops being objective
There is no agreed formula for attractiveness. Which landmarks you pick, which ratios you compute, what you treat as the "ideal," and how you weight each metric are all judgement calls. Change any one and the score moves. That is the whole reason two sites can hand you a 6 and an 8 for the same face — they are not disagreeing about you, they are measuring different things.
On top of that, a single 2D photo can't fully separate true asymmetry from the way a turned head squashes one side of the face. FaceGrade estimates how front-facing you are and warns you when the photo isn't straight-on, because that is exactly when a symmetry score stops meaning much.
So read a face score as a description of your proportions against a popular ideal, not a verdict on your face. The breakdown is the useful part: it tells you which measurements are strong and which sit off-centre, which is far more actionable than a single number.
Can you calculate a face score by hand?
You can get a rough version with a ruler and a mirror, and people do. Measure your face from hairline to chin and across the cheekbones, divide one by the other, and compare the result to 1.618 for the golden-ratio check. Do the same for mouth width against face width and you have two of the five numbers. The problem is that hand-measuring is where the method quietly falls apart: the "ideal" reference values are contested, a tape measure on your own face is imprecise, and there is no practical way to mirror 478 points to get honest symmetry. A calculator that reads landmark coordinates does the same arithmetic far more consistently.
What actually moves your score
Because the score is geometric, most of the change you can create is in the photo and the things you control around the face, not the bone structure. A head turned even slightly off-axis can cost a symmetry point that has nothing to do with your face. Wide-angle selfie lenses stretch the nearest feature. Grooming shifts the measured jaw and canthal region more than people expect — a shaped beard line changes the chin angle the model reads. Fix the camera and the grooming before concluding a number is a fixed fact about you.
